Profile of a
confident job seeker
Abridged: Management-issues.com HERNDON,
VA
-- Self-confidence can make or break a job or career search. It allows
you to have a positive yet realistic view of yourself. With it, you
trust your own abilities and have a general sense of control in your
life. Without it, you're frustrated and stuck - until you learn that
having and keeping it - is really within your own control.
Many job seekers who lack confidence depend excessively on the
'approval' of others in order to feel good about themselves. They tend
to avoid taking risks because they fear failure, and generally do not
expect to be successful. By contrast, self-confident job seekers are
willing to risk the disapproval of others because they generally trust
their own abilities. They tend to accept themselves; they don't feel
they have to conform in order to be accepted.
Develop personal standards and values that are meaningful to you and do
not be dependent on the 'approval' of others. Similarly, if you wallow
in "the past has done me wrong", consider that you can become aware of
those influences and make a choice to move beyond them.
Making yourself irresistible to employers
Abridged: Star Tribune
MINNEAPOLS, MN --
If you've been passed over for promotion, rejected for the job of your
dreams or lost enthusiasm in your current career, maybe it's time to go back
and add the skills and education that would make you irresistible to
employers.
"We see many adult learners return because they are passionate about a
career change and opportunities for advancement," says Dara Hagen, director
of career services at Century
College. It's becoming
very common for students to return to school because without it many are not
eligible for a promotion and, in some cases, would not even be eligible to
apply for the job they now hold.
Lack of a bachelor's degree can also limit your ability to move to other
opportunities, which is becoming increasingly important. Once you have a
degree, your career options take off. Returning to school does take
sacrifices, and it is hard work, but the sense of satisfaction and the
skills developed can pay off not only in career progression but in your own
level of satisfaction with your life.
A
memorable cover letter will boost your chances
Abridged: CareerJournal.com
PRINCETON,
NJ -- The longer your experience, the shorter and more direct your cover
letter. For some senior executives, this may be the new rule to writing
these introductory letters. They're viewing them as lead-ins to their
resumes and offering only brief introductions and perhaps a testimonial
about their character and leadership qualities.
Take Mike Lorelli, a former president and chief executive officer of Pizza
Hut International. Mr. Lorelli left Pepsico, Pizza Hut's holding company, in
1994 and has had several jobs since. He's now the CEO of a private-equity
company in
New York. He
leads off cover letters by mentioning the roles he's held at Pizza Hut and
other top companies, which gives him instant respect and credibility with
potential employers. "It helps to have a hook," says Mr. Lorelli. "Something
creative and relevant that captures the reader's attention."
In a competitive job market, it's crucial to differentiate yourself from the
competition. In many cases, your cover letter is your first contact with
employers. If you don't impress an employer right away, you may not get the
attention you want.
Is career change
in your future?
Abridged: ExecutiveRegistry.com
PETERBOROUGH,
NH
-- Have you been feeling restless in your career lately? Or, have you
been wondering what's next? Managing your career is similar to keeping
your body in shape. Just like an annual check-up ensures you're in good
physical condition, it's important to monitor your career in the same
way.
Ask yourself at regular intervals if your career development is as it
should be or needs a new focus. If your work life seems stalled and you
feel dissatisfied, a career change may be in order! You may feel that
changing to an entirely different field at this point in your life is
too risky, but with careful planning, it's possible.
You can't really know what could be done until you investigate further.
In fact, you may discover related possibilities that don't require a
dramatic change or reduction in salary. A recent client, a governmental
relations executive, was quite successful but didn't feel fulfilled
professionally. After career assessment and time to think through his
needs and interests, he realized that he'd be much more satisfied in a
leadership role. However, he didn't want to relinquish such a lucrative
income. My client was able to negotiate a new position and he did not
have to take a salary cut. There's no reason you can't do this too.
Study Results: Hiring
and compensation trends
Abridged: Robert Half International
MENLO PARK,
CA -- Job candidates are more apt to ask for higher starting salaries this
coming year, and companies may have to up the ante to attract them. That's
according to an annual study on employment and compensation trends by Robert
Half International (RHI) and CareerBuilder.com titled The (EDGE) Report.
Fifty-seven percent of hiring managers polled for the project said it was
difficult to find qualified candidates 12 months ago; 91 percent said
recruiting is equally or more challenging today. More than half (52 percent)
of hiring managers who are having trouble recruiting cited a shortage of
qualified professionals.
As the compensation for skilled labor has become more pronounced, 58
percent of workers polled said they are more likely to negotiate a
better compensation package today than 12 months ago – double the number
from last year’s poll.
